Overview

Millions of people around the world each year face vision loss related to diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of visual impairment in the working age population. In some cases only surgery is able to save vision. Typical indications for vitrectomy are vitreous hemorrhage, tractional retinal detachment, combined tractional rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and traction macular edema. Vitreoretinal surgeons in these days are able to manage severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The functional results depend on the degree of retinal ischemia, especially in macula. Sometimes it may be disappointing even in anatomically successfully operated eyes. The decision for surgery in diabetic patients always requires a weighing of risks and benefits of surgery.

Key words:
diabetic macular edema – diabetic retinopathy – pars plana vitrectomy
