Overview

Diabetes mellitus is heterogenous disease with certain population differences in prevalence, etiopathogenesis and risk factors of diabetes and its chronic complications. Prevalence of autoimmune type 1 diabetes mellitus depends mainly of geographical distribution of MHC genes. World populations (Africans, South and East Asians) differs in risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms of type 2 diabetes mellitus, as well as in predisposition to its microvascular and macrovascular complications compared to European population. These differences in world populations require specific approach to treatment, including the choice of optimal antidiabetic drugs, indications of early insulin treatment and earlier requirement of insulin pump.

Keywords:

antidiabetic treatment – B-cells dysfunction – cardiovascular risk factors – diabetes mellitus – insulin resistance – population differences
